Building a business is filled with long days and sometimes even longer nights.  Nights filled with fear of: not making payroll, not being able to close the next deal, not being able to see my kids’ school activities because I’ll be busy, not bringing home enough money, not being successful in the eyes of my parents, family, spouse or friends. Argh!

But I’m here to tell you that there is no smooth path to successful entrepreneurship. I do know that there is a way to deal with fear. I deal with it every day in different ways. So I became curious. What are some of the biggest fears that entrepreneurs may have. I did a little snooping around and asking some “thought leaders” about a list of the top fears that  prevent people from getting what they want. Here’s what they came up with:

  1. economy
  2. making the wrong decision
  3. fear of failure
  4. jobs
  5. health
  6. family connections will suffer
  7. being successful
  8. retirement
  9. personal happiness
  10. finding their life’s purpose

Do these resonate with you? I thought they were very interesting. Anyway, whatever the fear is, we have to deal with it. So, here’s my “take” on it.

Five Easy Ways to Overcome Fear

When we have fear about an issue, we tend to create more of what we don’t want. When we release our fear, we can ask ourselves what we want to create and use our God-given talents to create different results. So here are five ways to easily overcome fear.

  1. Face your fear, and it loses its power. Ask yourself, “What’s the worse that could happen?”  Realistically, look at your fear and use your imagination to create the worse possible scenario. Ask yourself if that is something you want to create or you would like to experience. Chances are, the answer is a resounding “no.” Then ask yourself what you would like to create. and spend a little bit of time focusing your attention to what it would feel like to have that in your life. When your fear resurfaces once again, say “no” to it and focus on what you do want.
  2. Dissect your fear. Ask yourself, “What am I really afraid of?”  Fear is always about a future event. If someone is pointing a gun at you, you’re afraid of being shot, an event that may or may not happen in the future. When we stay focused in the moment, we have the power to change what happens next. If we focus on the moment, our fear no longer controls our choices, and we are more likely to create what we really do want rather than reacting to our fear.
  3. Examine your beliefs. Ask yourself, “What does my fear tell me about my beliefs?” You never experience life directly. What you experience is your filter system’s version of reality. You can use your fear to see the beliefs, agreements or assumptions that limit your experience of life, and let them go.
  4. Look at your fear from a different perspective. Ask yourself, “How can I see this through the eyes of love?” Fear can be used as a sign post or guide. God has given us a wondrous physical world. Yes, it is filled with evil doers. But the world is a wonder any way. The presence of fear is an indication that you aren’t connected to the essence of who and what you really are. So you can use fear as an opportunity. If you are afraid of intimacy, you can view it as an invitation to get out more and make more friends. Looking at fear from a different perspective gives you the opportunity to use it to improve the quality of your life.
  5. Ask for help. Ask yourself, “Do I feel disconnected from the closest people around me?” Whenever I am in fear, I withdraw. I don’t answer the phone calls or respond to emails. My experience is that fear is a very clear indication I need to pray and meditate. As soon as I open my heart and mind and ask for help, I am blessed with assistance from friends and, when I listen carefully, from God.

All of life is an opportunity to deepen our connection to our spirit, build our empowering beliefs, build long-lasting positive relationships. Life is a miracle. Reach out to your trusted advisors and to God. And watch the miracles occur.

Best to you,
