One kind word can warm three winter months.- Chinese Proverb
I was struck by an amazing experience this weekend. My family and I went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for an Open House weekend. I asked one student why he liked the school so much and he replied that it was the constant positive reinforcement and accountability. He proceeded to recount the tale of how he would have made a serious mistake in changing his major had it not been for the positive intervention by his advisor.
That got me thinking.
I’ve been thinking about kind words and how important it is that we say them and hear them. It’s so easy to criticize. And Lord knows we certainly have adopted sarcasm as a way of communicating. But how many different ways do we tell someone that we love them? A simple “I appreciate you” can go a long, long way.
So let’s not wait for a special occasion. Take some time today to reach out to a friend, family member, spouse or even a co-worker. Tell them how much they mean to you. I bet you’ve got the words they really need to hear.
Best to you,
Jim Herrera
